Christmas traditions in Puglia

There are many Christmas traditions in Puglia that are sure to keep you entertained throughout your trip. One of the most beautiful Christmas markets can be found in the town of Acquaviva delle Fonti, located in the province of Bari. Not only are there markets, but on almost every night, musical events take place, making the atmosphere even more magical.

According to tradition, some of the shows are performed by bagpipers. The actors dress in traditional Apulian peasant clothing, complete with wool socks, jackets, and sheepskin vests. These authentic experiences can only be witnessed during this time of year and should not be missed.

Taste the delicious Christmas dessert of Puglia

When it comes to Italian cuisine, Puglia is a must-visit destination during the Christmas season. To fully indulge in the local traditions, you simply cannot miss the delicious desserts that are typical of this time of year.

For instance, the delectable Cartellate is a fried dough that is coated with sweet wine. It’s so irresistible that you won’t be able to stop at just one bite. Additionally, you need to try the local dessert called Purciadduzzi, which consists of small fried dough balls that are coated with nuts, confetti, and honey. Although they are similar to Struffoli in Naples, they are not exactly the same thing.

Learn the history of Pettole

In Puglia, there are various desserts to taste throughout the region. One that you must try is Pettole, which can be found in Taranto. The tradition says that on the day of Santa Cecilia (December 22nd), a woman woke up early to bake bread. While she was preparing the dough, she heard the sound of bagpipes and followed the music, leaving the dough to grow.

Upon returning, she found that the dough had risen too much and couldn’t be used for baking bread. Despite this setback, she didn’t give up and instead rolled the dough into small balls and fried them.

To her surprise, the kids loved the fried dough balls and asked what they were called. The woman made up a name, “Pettel,” inspired by the dialect word “Pitta”, meaning small focaccia. She and her kids went out to give the leftover bagpipe away to others. Since that day, Pettole has been a traditional dessert to try in Puglia.

From the charming markets of Lecce to the stunning decorations in Locorotondo, Puglia boasts some of the finest Christmas markets. During Christmas, Alberobello, famous for its Trulli and a UNESCO site, is adorned with lights and decorations, making it an even more enchanting place.

Locorotondo is definitely our preferred city to visit at any time of the year, but especially during Christmas. The snowy village, with its festive decorations and Christmas trees, transforms into a magical wonderland. Believe us when we say that you will never want to leave!

Visit Puglia’s best cities at Christmas

Our trip to Puglia for one week was full of delightful surprises. We had the chance to visit and explore incredible places from the north to the south. During Christmas time in Puglia, you can experience the joy of visiting the best cities adorned with beautiful decorations.

Although Puglia is commonly known as a summer destination, this time of the year is perfect for visiting its best cities. You will find locals all over the region jumping from one town to another to witness the festive season. Start your Christmas journey in Italy from Lecce or Bari and end it in Taranto, celebrating Santa Cecilia.

See the shrine of Padre Pio, St. Pio of Pietralcina

During this time of the year, many people from the surrounding area come to Puglia to visit San Giovanni Rotondo, a significant destination for Catholic pilgrims. This town is home to the burial place of Padre Pio, one of the most important shrines in the area.

Every year, pilgrims come to pay their respects, and it is a sacred destination that is definitely worth visiting if you’re spending winter in Puglia. Padre Pio was known for his miracles and is one of Italy’s most revered saints.

Visit the UNESCO town of Alberobello

Alberobello is a town located in Puglia that is known for its charming and romantic atmosphere. It has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the unique cone-shaped roofs of its houses, known as Trulli. This destination is perfect to visit at any time of the year, as the white village is adorned with lovely decorations that add to its appeal.

To get to Alberobello, you can take a train from either Locorotondo or Martina Franca. We were fortunate enough to find excellent accommodation that allowed us to travel to both villages in under 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can opt for a guided tour that includes Alberobello and Matera, which is also worth exploring.

Admire the beautiful Christmas lights around the cute narrow streets

Exploring every corner of the city during the Christmas season is a delightful experience, especially when admiring the enchanting decorations and lights. The main square in Ostuni is an ideal place to start, with its grand Christmas tree that offers a splendid welcome to the white village of Ostuni.

Locorotondo undoubtedly tops our list of favourite places in Puglia, and during Christmas, it becomes even more magical. On all the narrow streets, you will find twinkling lights, miniature Santas, Christmas trees, and all kinds of decorations. Adding Locorotondo to your Puglia itinerary is a must, as you will fall in love with this charming town from the moment you step inside.

Ostuni is a significant participant in the live nativity, with the first scene dating back to 1972. Today, both tourists and locals are drawn to Ostuni for this reason. If you wish to witness Presepe Vivente in another Southern Italian city, Naples is a great option to visit during Christmas.

Visiting the most beautiful churches during Christmas is a wonderful experience, and fortunately, most of them are free to visit. You can also admire the exquisite handcrafted nativity scenes, some of which are older than you might think but still well-preserved.

Christmas on the beach

For a long time, we’ve been dreaming of spending Christmas on the beach. While it may not be quite the same as Thailand, Puglia boasts some of the most breathtaking beaches around. From the popular tourist spot of Polignano a Mare to the stunning sandy shores of Gallipoli, you can plan a delightful picnic by the water and enjoy an alternative Christmas celebration.

With any luck, the weather will be lovely; typically, December in Puglia is mild, with temperatures above 15 °C, especially in the southern areas. Keep in mind that Puglia is considered one of Europe’s top destinations for those seeking winter sunshine. Nonetheless, all of Italy in winter is a fantastic location to spend the holiday, with delicious cuisine, pleasant temperatures, and friendly locals.

Spend a day or two in Bari, Santa Claus House

Bari is a perfect place to take your children and spend Christmas in Puglia. It’s a kid-friendly destination and home to the famous Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas, also known as San Nicola, is the city’s Patron Saint.

According to tradition, you can visit the Basilica of San Nicola di Bari and directly ask him to fulfil your wishes. It’s a delightful story to share with your kids, although you must remind them to behave well throughout the year. Otherwise, they might not get the chance to meet Santa in Bari.

See live nativity performances in Puglia

During Christmas time, Italians hold onto their traditions, and spending it with family is crucial. In Puglia, one of the popular activities is to witness a live nativity performance between December 22nd to 26th and January 3rd to 6th.

This Presepe Vivente, known as a living nativity scene, takes place across the region and remains the most significant original live nativity performance. It happens in the ancient amphitheatre of Lecce, around Alberobello’s trulli, and on the Sassi di Matera.

Celebrate Santa Cecilia in Taranto

When we lived in London, we had the opportunity to meet people from various parts of the world. Recently, we got acquainted with a fascinating couple from Taranto who shared their unique Christmas customs with us. Their cuisine was also delightful!

Taranto’s Christmas celebration is the longest one around, and it is customary to set up the Christmas tree on December 22nd. This day holds significance because Santa Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians.

On the night of the 22nd, the community gathers at San Cataldo Duomo to witness the music bands’ blessing, known as La Benedizione delle Bande. People of all ages follow the bands across the city in a traditional morning walk.
